Affectionately known as “the Lake,” Willoughby is famous for its massive, near-vertical ice climbing routes that form on the steep cliffs surrounding the lake. Stunning, high-quality ice rises dramatically from the lake’s surface, offering some of the most impressive climbing scenery in the northeastern United States.

This program will advance your Ice climbing skills. Our intermediate ice climbing courses are tailored to meet your needs, whether you are a veteran looking to break through to Grade-5 ice or it’s your second day out and you’re looking for some fine tuning.

Make your way to more sustained steep ice climbing with this course. You’ll learn to perfect your ice climbing technique by establishing resting positions, placement and removal of ice protection, and incorporating rock climbing movements into your ice climbing awareness.

Learn to read the winter story of the backcountry. During this three day (24 hours of total instruction) course, students will develop an understanding and application of tools to help navigate or avoid avalanches. Curriculum includes how to safely prepare for a backcountry trip, movement in avalanche terrain, and human dynamics.

Are you planning a trip to Alaska, Mt. Rainier, the Alps or South America this summer? This two-day intensive course will cover the skills of knots, friction hitches, roped travel techniques, self arrest, snow and ice anchors and extrication techniques.

A two-day course for experienced mountaineers ready to make the jump to committing and lightweight ascents of alpine snow, ice and mixed climbs. A technical climb of Mount Washington combined with a technical descent will be the focus of this strenuous test of skill, efficiency and strength.
