The AIARE (American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education) Level 1 Avalanche Course is a three-day (24 hour) introduction to avalanche hazard management.
Students can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a backcountry trip, to understand basic decision making while in the field, and to learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person (if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught).
Students are encouraged and counseled on how to best apply the knowledge gained and skills learned. Students are also counseled to continue their avalanche education, as no one course can fully guarantee safety during the course or following the AIARE level 1 course completion.
The AIARE 1 course is for anyone, regardless of method of backcountry travel, who would like to or currently ventures into or near avalanche terrain. Aspiring professionals will need to take the AIARE 1 and the 1-day Avalanche Rescue as a prerequisite for enrolling in more advanced courses AIARE courses (AIARE 2 or the AIARE Pro 1 course).
